L'Atalante

Jean Vigo is considered one of the great masters of French cinema, despite having died at the age of 29 and only making four films, of which L'Atalante is arguably the finest. The film revolves around a newlywed couple who are adjusting to life on board a canal boat.

I would like to nominate L'Atalante, as it remains a film of such power and emotional depth which never seems to fade.

David Mackenzie
Director

Of course it's crazy to nominate a single film, but the one I keep going back to and adore on every level is Jean Vigo's L'Atalante.
Everything about it just dances and it is so poetic, witty and beautiful (while being rooted completely in reality) that I still watch it through tears of joy, even though I've seen it many times.
That it was Vigo's only feature film before he died aged 29 only adds to the poignancy.
