Pather Panchali

In a Bengali village, young Apu, his elder sister and his parents strive to get by... That's almost it, plotwise, in Ray's remarkable debut; with its realist aesthetic, it's more a film of illuminating incidents than of a sustained linear storyline. Nevertheless, it speaks volumes about the currents of loyalty and betrayal, support and disenchantment that course through family life.
