Ryan's Daughter

This film has sometimes been described as David Lean's Madame Bovary. Starring Sarah Miles, later twice married to screenwriter Robert Bolt, the film displays Lean's taste for epic scenery. Set in early 20th-century Ireland against a backdrop of local hostility to the British, Rosy Ryan's adultery exposes the prejudices and cruelties of a remote, tightly-knit community.
