Q1 Which one film would you wish to share with future generations?
Raging Bull
USA 1980
The high-point in the long fruitful partnership of Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro.
There are so many films to choose from but if I have to choose only one, I would have to select Raging Bull by Martin Scorsese. One of my favourite filmmakers, who has made so many great films, but for me, this is his finest. It is such a powerful, brutal, beautiful, dark and tragic film. The film stands out in particular for me because each and every technical aspect of the film is pushing the cinematic art form to the very limit; the screenplay, acting, cinematography, design, sound, music and editing are all individually superb and they come together to form a perfect whole.
Q2 What excites you about the future of the moving image?
The medium is now truly open to everyone, there are endless possibilities. I recently did some teaching in the Arctic at a youth film festival in Norway, I worked with a group of young filmmakers from around the world, aged 16 – 21. It was amazing to see them working with digital cameras, cutting, grading and mixing their films on their laptops. They already knew more technically than I did! I am excited to see what talented young filmmakers like them will do with the medium in the future.
