David Mackenzie is a director whose films include Young Adam (2003) and Hallam Foe (2007), also writing the screenplays for both these pictures. In 2007 he was nominated a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Screenplay for Hallam Foe.
Q1 Which one film would you wish to share with future generations?
L'Atalante

A barge captain and his bride start their married life aboard a canal boat.
Of course it's crazy to nominate a single film, but the one I keep going back to and adore on every level is Jean Vigo's L'Atalante.
Everything about it just dances and it is so poetic, witty and beautiful (while being rooted completely in reality) that I still watch it through tears of joy, even though I've seen it many times.
That it was Vigo's only feature film before he died aged 29 only adds to the poignancy.
Q2 What excites you about the future of the moving image?
Let's see what happens and evolve with it. My taste in films is generally not mainstream, so I hope that the personal films are allowed to flourish as much as the industrial ones. I also hope for obvious reasons that the future involves me being allowed to continue making films.
