BFI Southbank
Over the last year, the space adjacent to National Film Theatre has undergone a major transformation. On 14 March this transformation will be complete and the refurbished and renamed site, BFI Southbank, will open its doors to the general public.
In addition to the existing three cinemas showcasing the best historical and contemporary film from around the world, we've created a number of exciting new FREE spaces, resources, services and activities.
BFI Mediatheque
Designed by award winning architect David Adjaye, the Mediatheque will enable individuals or small groups to browse a huge selection of titles from the BFI's National Archive for free.
From fragile film treasures to contemporary television, new digital technology has made it possible for everyone to enjoy this rarely seen footage. You could watch top-hatted Victorians promenading on Blackfriars Bridge (1896); applaud Barbara Windsor's exercise antics in Carry on Camping (1969) or discover the acclaimed Bullet Boy (2004) and much, much more.
BFI Gallery
This brand new gallery space will showcase leading contemporary artists' work in film, video and new media. Our debut exhibition is Tiny, Funny, Big and Sad from New York-based artists Jennifer and Kevin McCoy. Their work explores the previously unimagined and exciting possibilities of cinema.
Entrance to the Mediatheque and Gallery will be free and open to the public Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 8pm. Our three cinemas will be open daily.
Studio
A drop-in digital cinema showcasing archive and contemporary film, video and television material as well as hosting talks, presentations and education events will be situated in the new foyer space, off Theatre Avenue.
And much more
In addition to our existing river front café, a new relaxing and comfortable Benugo Bar & Kitchen complete with Wi-fi access will be the perfect place to meet an unwind.
Finally, a casual research, study and participation area equipped with a number of unique resources, largely drawn from the BFI's collections will sit alongside the Gallery, Mediatheque and Studio as well as a Filmstore stocked and staffed by BFI experts offering an extensive range of film and television books and DVDs.
