Mitchell & Kenyon in Liverpool

Films of an Edwardian City

With live piano accompaniment by Stephen Horne
Tuesday 13 May 2008, 7-9 pm, St George’s Hall, Liverpool

Cunard Vessel at Liverpool 1901

The BFI's Mitchell & Kenyon Collection, consisting of 28 hours of early silent film footage, provides an unparalleled visual record of Edwardian Britain. This selection of short films shows Liverpool, the  2008 European Capital of Culture, as it was in 1901. Captured in its imperial heyday, the city on the Mersey teems with vitality: the bustling docks, the ocean liners sailing for America, the electric trams and streets lined with opulent shops, the imposing architecture around Lime Street Station. There is also some unique footage of the early days of the city’s football clubs. This special screening - presented by Julia Hallam (University of Liverpool) and Vanessa Toulmin (University of Sheffield), with live piano accompaniment by Stephen Horne - will take place in the St George’s Hall, Liverpool, the original venue where the films were first screened over a hundred years ago. A must for all lovers of Liverpool (and Everton).

Presented by the University of Liverpool and the BFI in association with the University of Sheffield.
