All Quiet On The Western Front
Dir. Lewis Milestone
USA 1930 | Black & white | 130 mins | Cert PG | War
Cast: Louis Wolheim, Lew Ayres, John Wray
Based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, this film follows a group of young German recruits in the First World War. Their opinions on war drastically change. Though originally fired-up to enlist by their jingoistic teacher, the boys quickly learn about the drudgery and horror of trench warfare. As the word ‘enemy’ begins to lose its meaning, and the idea of right and wrong in war is continually called into question, the soldiers struggle to survive and to hold on to their humanity.
