Max Cady (Mitchum), recently released from prison, targets the family of lawyer Sam Bowden (Peck) – the man who put him there. Now a student of the law, Cady initially merely aggravates the family. Then he poisons their dog. Cady’s attention begins to fixate on Bowden’s daughter, Nancy (Lori Martin), and he becomes more and more violent. So Bowden must get up the nerve to face him and end his campaign of terror.
