Duck Soup

Dir. Leo McCarey

USA 1933 | Black & white | 68 mins | Cert U | Comedy

Cast: Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx

Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) becomes president of Fredonia at the behest of the bankrupt country’s last financier, Gloria Teasdale (Margaret Dumont). Firefly’s ridiculous and dictatorial policies upset his countrymen and provide ample opportunity for political parody, as he fails to galvanise his workforce or deal with sneaky foreign spies. Then when Ambassador Trentino of neighbouring Sylvania (Louis Calhern) also takes a liking to Mrs. Teasdale, Firefly takes offence and the two countries go to war over her!
