France 2005 | Colour | 120 mins | Cert 15

Cast: Marion Cotillard, Zoé Auclair

A new pupil arrives in a girls’ boarding school deep in a forest, delivered in a coffin-like box. Fitted out by the other girls in the uniform of white dress, DM boots and purple hair ribbon, she is inducted into the rules of her new home. Innocence teases the audience with a deepening sense of mystery and suggestion of menace, provoking questions on what the title word means and its place in the film. Lucile Hadzihalilovic makes a remarkable directorial debut.
