Dir. William Wyler
USA 1938 | Black & white | 106 mins | Cert U | Drama | Hollywood Classics
Cast: Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, George Brent, Donald Crisp
Great melodrama with Davis at her fiery best as the sexually transgressive Southern belle who stirs up passion and disapproval on the eve of the American Civil War. Excellent performances all round, especially from Fay Bainter who won an Oscar for her role as the supportive aunt. Davis also won her second Oscar for this, apparently as compensation for losing out to Vivien Leigh in the great casting battle of Gone With the Wind.
