Dir. George Sidney

USA 1953 | Colour | 110 mins | Cert U

Cast: Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel

It comes as little surprise that Cole Porter’s musical reinvention of the Bard’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’ was originally filmed in 3D (as well as ‘flat’): Sidney obsessively shoots frames within frames and has Miller forever kicking and throwing objects at the camera. Porter’s music is among his very best and his lyrics both topical (there’s an amusing invocation of the Kinsey Report) and outrageously punning – ‘If she says your behaviour is heinous, kick her right in the Coriolanus...’
