Set in a small village near Berlin, a bleak landscape of wintry trees and lakes, Longing is tinged from the start with a sense of unease. Markus and Ella fell in love as teenagers and are now married. Their life together seems enviably happy and secure, but Markus becomes unsettled when he discovers a car driven off the road in an apparent suicide attempt. As a volunteer fireman, he later goes away for a training weekend with other men from the local fire station and, after a night of heavy drinking, wakes up in bed next to Rose, a local waitress who contemplates him with an eerie, knowing smile. With no recollection of how he got there or whether they had sex, Markus is thrown into deep confusion. From now on, despite himself, he is passionately in love with two women.
