This charming and funny film was the Silver Bear winner at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Set in contemporary Iran, a girl disguises herself as a boy in an attempt to watch the world cup qualifying match between Iran and Bahrain. But she is discovered, and is held for the duration of the match along with some street-smart female fans. As they argue with the naïve soldiers who are their reluctant gaolers, the absurdity of the law forbidding female spectators is gradually revealed. Offside is a hilarious, comic and hugely entertaining film, cleverly illustrating the fight for women’s rights in Iran.
