Scarface
Dir. Howard Hawks
USA 1932 | Black & white | 83 mins | Cert 15 | Crime | Drama
Cast: Paul Muni, Ann Dvorak, Karen Morley
Set in Chicago during Prohibition, Scarface sees Tony Camonte rise from the streets to become a feared and respected gangster. Based on the life of Al Capone, the film’s gritty violence and themes of corruption and incest provided film censors with many contentious issues, requiring the cutting and addition of several scenes. The original open ending was replaced with a dramatic final shootout which ensures that Camonte’s name will live in infamy.
