Dir. James Whale
US 1936 | Black & white | 115 mins | Hollywood Classics | Musical
Cast: Irene Dunne, Helen Morgan, Paul Robeson, Hattie McDaniel
Kern and Hammerstein’s musical blockbuster of miscegenation on the Mississippi, is a triumph for almost all involved (the only weak link is a rather lacklustre Allan Jones). Morgan’s delivery of ‘Bill’ is tragically heart-rending; Robeson’s ‘Ol’ Man River’ is, of course, definitive; John Mescall’s cinematography is lustrous, and Whale’s direction among his greatest.
