Catherine (de Havilland) is the shy and awkward daughter of a doctor, who has never forgiven her for lacking the wit and loveliness of her mother. The doctor believes that no man could be attracted to her except by considerable fortune she will inherit. He does everything in his power to prevent the poor Morris Townsend (Clift) from marrying his daughter, including taking her on an extended European holiday. But can the marriage take place when they return?
