Based on a legend, the film recounts the efforts of the Georgian people to build a fortress against invaders. The building keeps collapsing until a fortune teller reveals that the son of her one-time lover must be bricked up alive for the fortress to stand. Presented in twenty-one named chapters, the film takes tapestries and still-lifes as a visual model for its compositions.
