Reporter Burke Devlin (Hudson) is fascinated by a troupe of former First World War fighter aces, led by Roger Schumann (Stack), now relegated to performing on the aerial stunt circuit. He is shocked that Schumann’s pursuit of the thrill of flying leaves his family living in poverty. He is also overly attracted to Schumann’s wife, LaVerne (Malone). As Devlin attempts to put together enough for a newspaper feature, each character attempts to deceive the others, and ultimately themselves.
