The Women
Dir. George Cukor
USA 1939 | black & white | 133 mins | Cert U | Comedy | Hollywood Classics
Cast: Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard
George Cukor's legendary comedy is the ultimate woman's picture, with an extraordinary female cast of 135 and a script by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin, adapted from a play by Clare Boothe.
Although we never see a single man on screen, the Manhattan socialites at the centre of The Women spend much of their time talking about men, and after feisty shop assistant Crystal (Crawford) steals the husband of Mary (Shearer), much uproarious bitchiness follows.
