Went the Day Well?
Dir. Alberto Calvacanti
UK 1942 | Black & white | 92 mins | Drama | War
Cast: Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Allen, Frank Lawton
Cavalcanti’s wartime drama is a stunningly effective warning of the dangers of a ‘Fifth Column’. German paratroopers disguised as British soldiers take over a stereotypically sleepy English village to set up a radio station. Once the Nazis are revealed, the villagers, including an axe-wielding postmistress, wake from their complacency and fight back with surprising ruthlessness.
