School Cinema Partnerships

A new report from bfi Education

One way of giving young people access to a wider range of films on the big screen is to set up a 'cine-club' with a local cinema. But how easy is this, especially in rural areas? A new report, 'You Might Change the Way People Think' (PDF, 147kb), describes just such a project with two Devon schools and their local cinemas, which was led by the bfiin partnership with Devon LEA and the South West Film and Video Development Agency, and funded by the DfES Partners in Study Support scheme. The report outlines the many diverse and often-unexpected benefits the project brought to the pupils, the schools and the cinemas. It also describes the problems that the project encountered and the very particular and different circumstances in each school through which two quite distinct version of the project emerged.

This story may both encourage and help schools and cinemas in other parts of the UK to develop yet more versions of school-cinema links and to offer pupils a chance to discover the world of film. It may also encourage funders and policy-makers to recognize that projects like this may not be best fostered through 'one size fits all' funds or directives but need time - and support - to grow in their own way.
