GCSE History
The film can be used for GCSE students of Modern World History syllabuses and Schools History Project units on Nazi Germany. It is recommended that students should have covered the necessary course content on the rise of Nazism in Germany before watching the video. It would be especially useful for revision purposes.
Suggestions for revision
- Watch the first 16 minutes of the video then discuss how Hitler came to power in 1933.
- Who supported the Nazis?
- What kinds of people may have been in the audience at Hitler's inaugural speech?
- Watch the KPD (Communist Party) demonstrations [52.27-54.36].
- Who opposed the Nazis?
- How did the Nazis deal with their opposition?
- Watch the book burning at the end of the video [1:25:25-1:27:35].
- What kinds of books would the Nazis have burnt?
- What other methods did the Nazis use to persecute Jews and other 'undesirable' groups?
- Having watched the entire film, students could assess the role of Joseph Goebbels in the rise and success of the NSDAP. They could also comment on the skills of Hitler as an orator.
- Students could watch the film and identify key factors leading to the rise of the Nazis, eg poverty; propaganda; anti-Semitism; the end of the First World War.
