The Mitchell and Kenyon Collection in Key Stage 3 history

Progress 1850-1900?

Special March Past of St Joseph's Scholars and Special Parade of St Matthew's Pupils, Blackburn, 1905

Another common Key Stage 3 history topic is addressed through QCA Unit 11: 'Industrial changes - action and reaction'. The main focus of this unit is on the period 1750-1850, looking at the pros and cons of industrialisation from a number of different perspectives.

The Mitchell and Kenyon Collection provides an opportunity to extend this study another 50 years or so and allow students to look at what further progress, if any, had been made in that period. Students could be asked to study selected films grouped under different headings and to search for evidence that life had changed in those particular areas. For most students, the most accessible approach to this exercise is to be given a number of suggested changes and developments and then study the films for evidence of them. However, some more able students could simply watch the films and develop their own hypotheses based on their contextual knowledge.
