Background to cinema-going

This section provides a general and brief history of cinema-going across the UK looking at the key periods of change. The Case Study of Rugby shows how much information is available at a local level. The information contained in the case study was all gained through the main library in Rugby. It was used to refresh people's memories of the old cinemas during film and reminiscence introductory sessions and later by pupils involved in the intergeneration project. Pupils visited the sites of the old cinemas to see what had replaced them as part of an activity on building a map of the area and finding out more about the history of their town. "It would have been good to see what the old cinema was like but if it was here we wouldn't have Woolworths" said one pupil!
