First Light Young Film Fund: using archive footage

The BFI and First Light, the UK’s leading initiative enabling young people to learn new skills via creative digital film and media projects, are working together to encourage use of archive films in filmmaking.

First Light provides grants of up to £30,000 for creative filmmaking projects working with 5-19 year olds. If you are interested you can apply to First Light’s Young Film Fund for a grant. See below for full application guidelines.

In association with the BFI, First Light is keen to allocate grants to creative filmmaking projects using archive film. Below is a link to the BFI's profile on Vimeo, where you can see a range of films from the BFI National Archive.

These films from the BFI National Archive show Britain at various moments in the 20th century, revealing a range of different and changing attitudes to social and economic issues. They provide a great focus for young people interested in making films about the society in which we live. If you are interested in using archive film in a creative filmmaking project working with 5-19 year olds, you can apply to First Light’s Young Film Fund for a grant of up to £30,000.

For alternative films, you can try the BFI YouTube channel and BFI Creative Archive.
