The Mitchell and Kenyon Collection in GCSE history

Lieutenant Clive Wilson, 1902.The greatest historical value of the films in the collection lies in the insight the films provide into the structure and nature of British society in the years leading up to the Great War. This makes the collection especially valuable in the OCR Modern World History Depth Study on Britain 1906-18. However, most other modern world GCSE courses contain a unit in which students examine the impact of the Great War on British society. Clearly, it is easier to identify and evaluate change in a society if students have a sense of how that society thought and lived. Here the Mitchell and Kenyon Collection provides a valuable tool. These notes set out three possible lines of enquiry which might be used to introduce students to these important issues.

  • Britain in the early 1900s: a time of change?
  • Why are parades useful in understanding British society before the Great War?
  • How big a shock was war when it came in 1914?
