Cover: Teaching Contemporary British Cinema.

Recent developments in British cinema provide a fascinating area of study. But what is British cinema? Sarah Casey Benyahia looks at its diverse range of film styles and themes, from the representation of social issues to star-led romantic comedies. Through detailed case studies, suggested schemes of work and student activities, this Teaching Guide illustrates the different approaches to teaching British cinema with specific reference to post-16 education.

Contents include:

  • Theoretical contexts to the study of British cinema, clearly explained with reference to key thinkers and, in particular, to representation, ideology and national identity.
  • Questions of funding, distribution and exhibition, including the role of the UK Film Council.
  • Case studies on social realism (focusing on Dirty Pretty Things, Last Resort, In This World), British Asian cinema (focusing on My Son the Fanatic, Bend it Like Beckham); and British cinema and institutions (focusing on FilmFour and Working Title).
