Future Projects
The techniques of cinema, even the extraordinary developments of the last few decades, are not what fascinate me in truth. What fascinates me is what the film has to say. Of course it has to be entertaining because unless we bring people in to enjoy themselves, they won't hear anything. I'm not interested in making a wonderfully erudite, groundbreaking piece of film to be shown to two men and a dog in a barn. For me the purpose of doing it is to gather people to hear what you want to say, and it is the actors who eventually convey that importance to the audience. It is the players and therefore, beyond all things, it is the actors and the direction of the actors that matters to me.
I am working on two subjects - one called Shattered Dreams, about Robbie Burns, and a picture called Closing The Ring, about a real incident in 1943, written by Edward Woodward's son Peter and probably the best first screenplay I've ever read. The cast is in place with Shirley MacLaine, Dennis Hopper, Colin Hanks and Mena Suvari, but we have only got about 85% of the money. I literally wait day by day to hear from its originator/producer Jo Gilbert about the remaining funds, so we don't know exactly when we are going to start.
