Hepburn was consistently cast opposite much older leading men - Astaire, Bogart, Cooper, Cary Grant, Rex Harrison - yet the onscreen affairs never seemed inappropriate, the men never came across as exploitative, and there was no sense of anything as corny or obvious as regaining lost youth through the May-December romance. Instead, the consistent theme seems to have been that only these wise and world weary figures could appreciate this remarkable young woman, and give her the respect and adoration she deserved - callow youths need not apply. It's no coincidence that Hepburn did her best work opposite veteran co-stars, with similarly experienced men behind the camera.
