It wasn't only her performance in Sabrina which earned Hepburn a place in Billy Wilder's affections. Struggling through filming with an unfinished script, the director found himself with a day of shooting scheduled and not enough material to occupy the cast and crew. Wilder knew that admitting this problem to the studio could cause something of a panic - if the director, the established, major talent doesn't know what he is doing maybe the picture is in big trouble. On the other hand, if a temperamental young actress is having a bad day... Hepburn bailed Wilder out, feigning illness and slowing filming down sufficiently to give him time to write new scenes.
