Knight Without Armour
Camera Operator on Knight Without Armour (GB 1937/Dir. Jacques Feyder)
Jack Cardiff on set with Jacques Feyder directing.
Robert Donat and Marlene Dietrich.
JC: "Marlene Dietrich had learned a lot about lighting from Josef von Sternberg, the director, who was also a brilliant cameraman. She had a full-length mirror by the side of the camera and she would comment to Harry Straddling, my cameraman - 'Harry, I think the back light could be a bit stronger', etc. Harry would whisper to me, 'Godammit, she's always right!' Bob Donat got fed up with the mirror business and in the end he got one of his own on the other side of the camera!"
