This epic and acclaimed film' s story begins with the partition of India in 1947 and continues up to 1960s in the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Minoti and Bidyut are children of the Hindu widower Shashikanta Sengupta. Their best friends are Badal and Nazma from a neighbouring Muslim family. The Sengupta family live in their old ancestral house on the banks of the Chitra. After partition large numbers of Hindus were migrating to India leaving their homes and property behind, but Shashikanta stubbornly refuses to leave the country. Director Tanvir Mokammel, who is also a well known Bangladeshi writer and thinker, handles the emotive issues of partition and religious tension with great tact and a minimum of sensationalism.
