4. Shimana Perye (1977)
Alternative title: Across The Fringe
Language: Bengali
Director: Alamgir Kabir
Starring: Jayashree Kabir, Bulbul Ahmed
Set in 1970, just before the independence of Bangladesh, the film is a rare look at the male female equation. A young, city bred, wealthy woman from Dhaka (the capital of Bangladesh) visits a village in rural Bangladesh. She is caught in one of the many coastal storms that ravage the low-lying country annually. When she comes to after braving the storm, she finds that she is marooned on an island. The only other person on the island is a simple boatman. The stage is now set for a fascinating relationship between the city woman and the rural man. The film is remembered for the riveting performance of Jayashree Kabir (director Alamgir Kabir's wife and long term collaborator) and Indian maestro Bhupen Hazarika's folk melodies.
