5. Beder Meye Josna (1989)

Language: Bengali

Director: Tojammel Hossen Bokul

Starring: Anju Ghosh, Ilias Kanchon

This simple folk tale about a snake charmer's daughter is the biggest box office success in the history of Bangladeshi cinema. A remake of the film was released in the state of West Bengal in India and it quickly broke box-office records there too. The unabashedly commercial film is clearly aimed at the masses and not the cultural elite and led Indian art house cinema director Gautam Ghosh to remark, "There is no cinema without commerce. I think you're talking about popular taste cinema. Well Beder Meye Josna was a super duper hit movie. The credit goes to the director who could bring the folklore to celluloid."
