7. Dhire Bohe Meghna (1973)
Alternative title: Quiet Flows The River Meghna
Language: Bengali
Director: Alamgir Kabir
Starring: Babita, Bulbul Ahmed, Anwar Hussain
Set in the aftermath of the bloody struggle for independence that marked the formation of Bangladesh in 1971, the film is an unrelenting look at the atrocities that happened during that time. A group of visitors arrive from Calcutta in newly independent Bangladesh to assess for themselves the grim realities of post genocide life in the country. Prolific director Alamgir Kabir pulls no punches while putting his point across. His cast including the popular Babita (who won great acclaim for her role in Satyajit Ray's Ashani Sanket) and Anwar Hussain do a stupendous job of conveying the horror that was the war for freedom.
