8. Rupali Shaikate (1979)
Language: Bengali
Director: Alamgir Kabir
Starring: Kafi Khan, Jayashree Kabir, Bulbul Ahmed
Journalist, film critic and writer Alamgir Kabir has made several of Bangladeshi cinema's most seminal films and Rupali Shaikate is no exception. This time around, Kabir tackles a problem endemic to modern day Bangladesh - corruption. The film explores the deep-rooted nature of corruption in the country and exposes the shadowy nexus between politicians and the underworld. In trademark Kabir style, there is no sugar coating of unpleasant truths. And as always, his repertory company consisting of his wife Jayashree Kabir, Bulbul Ahmed, Anwar Hussain and Kafi Khan perform their well-defined roles excellently. It is yet another remarkable film from a remarkable director.
