Nayyar Sultana was renowned as the tragedy queen of Pakistani cinema and Baji is an ideal showcase for her talents. In the film she plays the titular Baji (elder sister) who has to undergo many sacrifices with great conviction. Her on screen pairing with her real life spouse Darpan was a great success. Baji is considered one of the finest examples of melodramatic cinema. A contributing factor for the success of the film was Saleem Iqbal's music with Naseem Begum singing a few soulful numbers. The film won 5 Nigar awards including one for best film.
