The Calcutta born Nazrul Islam was one of Pakistani cinema's most talented directors. He emigrated from India to the then East Pakistan and quickly made his mark directing Bengali films. When East Pakistan became Bangladesh, he moved to West Pakistan and became known as a director of sensitive Urdu films. Islam cast the hit pair of Pakistani superstar Nadeem and Shabnam in a few successful films. Bandish repeats the pair. Like many of Islam's films Bandish is primarily a study of human relationships set to music by long time collaborator Robin Ghosh. The film is noted for its song visualisations. Bandish won seven Nigar awards including ones for the music, lyrics and singing.
