Ashok Banker

Image: book cover

While there are a plethora of books on Bollywood in general, there are very few that provide information on a range classic films. Ashok Banker's pocket sized book goes decade by decade and lists key films from the dawn of cinema to the present day. The importance of each film within the overall context of the industry is discussed along with some pithy comments by the author. Plot synopses, important scenes and similar films are also discussed.

The best thing about Banker's book is that the writing is very fluid, tongue in cheek and therefore accessible. Not for Banker academic deconstructions of film. The book is clearly written for the lay Bollywood enthusiast and there are precious few of those around. And that's what makes the book a welcome addition to any film buff's library.
