Ken Loach: This was an extraordinary film on which to work.

This scene shows the betrayal of the anti-fascist militia by the Stalinist-dominated new regular army. It was an extraordinary shoot because it was witnessed by Spanish Civil War veterans who had told us what had happened and how it had happened. As we filmed, they spent the whole day with tears running down their cheeks.
