Salo conference at the ICA

A bfi/ICA Special Event, 29 & 30 September, 2000

This special two-day event jointly organised by the bfi and the ICA brought together an exciting array of speakers to debate and reevaluate Salò. The event began on the evening of Friday 29 September 2000 with a screening of the film, introduced by Gary Indiana. On Saturday there were short papers and two roundtable discussions.

Friday 29 September, 8.30

  • General introduction to the event.
  • Introduction to the film by Gary Indiana.
  • Screening of a new bfi print of Salò (117 mins, Italian with English subtitles)

Saturday 30 September

  • 10.00 Sam Rohdie on Salò in relation to Pasolini's career and preoccupations
  • 10.30 David Forgacs on Salò and the legacy of fascism in European culture
  • 11.15 General discussion (Sam Rohdie, David Forgacs, Geoffrey Nowell-Smith) and audience reaction
  • 12.15 James Ferman on the film's censorship history, followed by discussion
  • 2.15 Artists' panel (Neil Bartlett, Jenny Diski, Gary Indiana), followed by discussion
  • 4.15 Separate screening of the film introduced by James Ferman (Tickets £8, concessions £7)

Notes on speakers

  • Neil Bartlett is a performer, director and writer. Until recently he was Artistic Director of the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith.
  • Jenny Diski's books include Skating to Antarctica and Don't. She writes regularly for the London Review of Books.
  • James Ferman was Director of the British Board of Film Classification from 1975 to 1999.
  • David Forgacs is Professor of Italian at University College London.
  • Gary Indiana's latest book is Three Month Fever: The Andrew Cunanan Story.
  • Geoffrey Nowell-Smith is editor of The Oxford History of World Cinema.
  • Sam Rohdie is Professor of Film Studies at Queen's University Belfast.
