10: Brideshead Revisited

Number 2 in the Drama Series/Serial category

This 13-part dramatisation of Evelyn Waugh's novel, one of the TV highpoints of the 1980s, suffered a rocky start when the ITV strike of 1979 closed down filming and the production lost some crucial cast and crew. But in the end Anthony Burgess pronounced Brideshead 'the best piece of fictional television ever made'. The lavish locations (Oxford, Venice, Castle Howard) looked wonderful, the Oxford scenes in particular having a seductively lazy flavour, and the impressive cast conjured up some sublime performances, especially Jeremy Irons, a scene-stealing John Gielgud and Anthony Andrews, who won a BAFTA award.    VT
