4: The Naked Civil Servant
Number 2 in the Single Drama category
Adapted from his autobiography, The Naked Civil Servant tells the life story of Quentin Crisp, an effeminate homosexual, and his determination to achieve acceptance of his right to lead an open, indeed flamboyant, gay lifestyle without harassment or humiliation. Hurt's superb performance in the title role is both touching and very funny, a wonderful tribute to Crisp's courage, wit and intelligence; and Jack Gold's imaginative direction was a joy. Quentin Crisp became an international celebrity as a result. VT
