Despite detractors from the word go, Top of the Pops is now in sight of the 40 year mark. There is something both pure and effective about a chart based show that features the artists performing in the flesh (if not always actually playing). It has had some incredibly exciting moments that have proved an epiphany for countless teenagers from Penzance to Perth and has been a goal for aspiring musicians everywhere. As well as adapting to new markets it is a treasure trove for the archives, spawning a sister programme TOTP2. PW
