44: Steptoe and Son
Number 13 in the Comedy/Variety category
Galton and Simpson's comedy, set in a London rag & bone yard, demonstrated their mastery of the sitcom form. The story, repeated in endlessly inventive variations, revolved around the socially ambitious Harold's forlorn attempts to escape both his uncouth father and his class, only to be undone each time by ineptitude or, more often, his father's selfish wiles. Effortlessly funny, thanks largely to the unusual chemistry of its two leads, the series' real strength lay in its extremely acute observations on class and generational conflict. MD
