7: Boys From The Blackstuff
Number 1 in the Drama Series/Serial category
Seminal drama series following the fortunes of the tarmac gang of Bleasdale's earlier play The Black Stuff. On their return to Liverpool they find their lives closing in on them through unemployment and poverty. Bernard Hill as the desperate Yosser struck a particularly haunting chord with viewers. The programme was a warm, humorous but ultimately tragic look at the way economics affect ordinary people. It still stands as TV's most complete dramatic response to the Thatcher era and as a lament to the end of a male, working class British culture. PW
