75: Quatermass and the Pit
Number 20 in the Drama Series/Serial category
Third serial to feature Nigel Kneale's sci-fi hero, after The Quatermass Experiment and Quatermass II. As in the previous stories, the Professor - played here by André Morell - was pitted against an extraterrestrial threat, in this case an ancient hostile intelligence from Mars uncovered by archaeological work, in a story which mined mythology and folklore. Completely gripping, under the guise of genre it tackled serious themes of man's hostile nature and the military's perversion of science for its own ends. MD
