British television's premier talk show, much imitated but never bettered, it dominated the scene in the '70s and returned after a long period of experimentation in the genre failed to produce a better formula. Its success has been due mainly to its host's mixture of journalistic inquisitiveness and acute sense of what is entertaining, coupled with the opportunity to conduct his interviews at length. Many notable guests included Orson Welles, Muhammad Ali, Dr Jacob Bronowski, Billy Connolly, Kenneth Williams, Rod Hull and Emu. SB
